ugh today’s clinical kind of made me sad/mad. We had a pregnant woman on our med-surg floor today and my nurse had her as a patient. I didn’t have any assigned patients to take care of today because I was following a nurse. The patient is 26 weeks pregnant, 2cm dilated (premature), and is due in February. She was on our unit because her EKG showed she had prolonged QT waves, and she stated she had 2 episodes of syncope. She is on bed rest in the hospital until she reaches 7 months (hopefully).
Pregnant women are supposed to eat and gain weight. That’s normal and very very expected. BUT this patient WOULDN’T EAT!!!! omg omg she won’t eat!! Why? you ask? BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T WANT TO GAIN WEIGHT!!!!!!!!! OMG you are supposed to gain weight while you are pregant woman!!!! YOU HAVE TO give the baby nutrients!!!!You WILL LOSE the weight after the baby is born!!!!!Get that in your head!!!
She straight up told my nurse and I she is afraid to gain weight, so she won’t eat!!!!So my nurse and I straight up told her, YOU HAVE TO EAT, YOU WILL HARM THE BABY!!!!!!!!! the baby is going to have serious complications if you don’t feed you and your baby!!! AHHHHHHH my mind was BLOWN UP!!!
So we had to do a calorie count on her breakfast, and guess what, SHE MOVED ALL HER FOOD AROUND to pretend SHE ATE IT!!! whatttttt, omg! She probably ate .00000005 of her food. My jaw dropped, wahhhhh!!
I sat down and spent 45 minutes with her just chatting so she can open up to me and express her fears or anything about her pregnancy. She opened up sort of. I told her that eating will help the baby and all that and it needs nutrients to survive! She was like, ‘well I’ve always been small, and really don’t want to gain any more weight’. My heart skipped beats. This baby is suffering. :( It’s already premature, but it’s going to have problems because of her anorexia!!! All the nurses are so upset! The nurse called the nutritionist asap!!
//end rant. I know it’s her life and her baby, but I wanted to help her so much! She’s A NURSING STUDENT!!!! She knows all this!!! She is doing this to HERSELF!!!
I wish her the best! I wish the baby the best!!! I hope both she and her baby do well when the baby is born!!!! -crosses fingers!!!-
BTW on another note…. I got an 80 on my exam on Tuesday, SO FREAKING HARD, but I passed and I’m happy with an 80. woot woot!
